No, I’ve not turned my hand to weather forecasting – although based on recent weeks, the white stuff IS a possibility!
I am of course talking about this chap…
After many months of soul searching, deliberating, hair-watching and lie detecting, he’s about to be back on our screens as Season 6 of the GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH premieres! (Slight, ‘can’t believe you’ve not heard this plot point’, S5 spoiler ahead!)
Or is he? You see, until it starts, nobody is certain whether Jon Snow will have escaped his fate, dealt out on the end of many knives via the Night’s Watch (and that hateful child Olly). We’re currently in a Schrödinger’s Cat situation – at the moment he is both alive AND dead. Turning on the TV ‘box’ will decide the outcome.
If there’s a chance he’ll be resurrected into some immortal warrior, then I’ll take the risk of peeking inside.
Pfft – like I could even try to stay away! One of the things I’m most looking forward to about having a weekly dose of Thrones back in my life is the theme tune and opening credits. For me, it stirs up similar emotions to listening to / watching the Star Wars opening scroll – pure excitement!
Which brings me to FAD NUMBER 756: CECIL
You may remember Cecil from a couple of months ago – he’s a very photogenic fellow. (Back then, he was known as Cedric, but I had a senior moment and forgot this major plot point.) He is, of course, my cello.
As some of you know, I had the ludicrous idea to take up this instrument, pretty much from scratch. I love the sound it makes and although I’ve been ‘learning’ the basics with the children at school on and off for a few years, I have never;
- Played beyond the four basic strings (C,G,D,A)
- Had to tune the it
- Read sheet music
- Learned any other instrument.
Hmm…. Tall-Orders R Us!
Undeterred by my lack of knowledge and previous Fad Fails, I was determined to buy one. After all, it would make a beautiful ornament in the corner of the room. 😉
However, always the voice of reason, Sam did not think it was a good idea to spend several hundred pounds on something I’d likely get fed up with, so encouraged me to hire one to begin with.
Which is what I did, on a three month loan – just enough time to master it and learn the Game of Thrones theme tune before the premier!
Yeah, right. So, this is how it went…
Week 1: Full of enthusiasm, practising for at least half an hour everyday. Developing my bow hold, learning how to read music, getting a feel for the instrument.
Week 2: Learning the positions on the finger board. Hurting my fingers. Having to resort to stickers to guide me. Let’s just practise tunes that require C,G,D,A shall we…?
Week 3: Come on, you can do this! Why do I need to learn to read music anyway when I’ve always learned by ear? Teach myself Twinkle, Twinkle. Play it badly. Decide I’m too heavy handed for a bow. Photograph Cecil instead.
Week 4: I think I was ill. I should really think about lessons.
Week 5: School music teacher cannot fit in lessons around my new job. Nobody else in the immediate area. Maybe see what happens with new job before committing to anything anyway. Continue to scratch my way through Twinkle, Twinkle.
Week 6: I need to learn the GoT theme. Discover ‘Guitar Hero’ style lessons online. Memorise the first few bars like a mantra. Still far too heavy handed with the bow. Decide I might have been better with a guitar…
Week 7: Oh, who am I kidding? Cecil is hibernating behind the sofa, wondering if his life would have been different as Cedric… 😦
Hmph, I’m useless! I’m like the GRRM of cello playing – a major task to undertake that everyone (me) has been waiting for by a certain time. The deadline has arrived and it’s still unfinished. I just wish I’d had some of his previous success!
I know I’ve made some progress and it’s apparently one of the more difficult instruments to learn (so says Google) but I’ve never been the most patient of people. However, I still have around a month before the hire is up – I’ll then decide whether to extend it or swallow yet another piece of humble fad pie.
But for your enjoyment torture , here’s an exclusive, behind-the-scenes look at my cello journey. Prepare to have your ears bleed…
Sooo… yeah, that was delightfully embarrassing wasn’t it?! It was a masterclass in bad-habit elbows, wrong notes and dodgy editing. Perhaps I should take up the drums. And by drums, I mean a set of old pans and some dustbin lids at the end of a very, very long garden.
Anyway, I couldn’t let you leave without restoring the musical balance, so for your actual enjoyment, here are some brilliant, alternative (and in some cases, bizarre) renditions of the Game of Thrones theme – I’m sure I recognise some of the musicians…
And remember, NO GoT SPOILERS – We Brits are behind on the broadcasting times! Thank you 🙂
Some real cellists (and an enthusiastic drummer) showing how it should be done… in a basement!
An alternative, classic guitar version by some guy in a (weir)wood – I hear he has no heart, perhaps he’s a Wight…
One man, one violin, yet he can be (almost) everyone in an orchestra. Like the Jaqen H’ghar of theme tune covers…
Accordians always sound a bit sea shanty-ish to me.
Maybe this could be Davos’ version?
Not to be seen in a Littlefinger establishment, these old school floppy drives (sorry, sorry…) scratch their way to perfection.
I have bad images that this is Jaime and Cersei ‘mood’ music…
And finally (what do you mean ‘thank goodness’, surely you can listen to it on loop all day?), these crazy Wildlings, who appear to be in onesies, don’t need additional instruments at all.

Did you know you can follow the Bobbins on Twitter and Facebook? Come and say hi!
*laughs lots* That was awesome! You look like you have great form and the bowing is sounding good… Onwards and upwards, madam! Remember, you’ve just started, too. (Your exasperated faces did make me laugh…)
Okay, a Wight sounds pretty cool. I bet I’m one of those, actually. Yes, now I’m sure about it. That video was filmed in negatives! I still haven’t recovered.

Haha, thanks for enduring the viewing! From your comments you must have watched with the sound down, surely?! 😉
Wights are cool, but dangerous. Which I feel befits you. They’re re-animated corpses (heartless) yet not scabby like a zombie!
Your fingertips were definitely ripe for frostbite… Very brave to suffer for your art. 🙂

Oh no no no-ey! Sound was up. I thought you did grandly, really. Now, no quitting! Or…or…or…I’ll be cross!
*laughs* You think of me as a re-animated corpse? Gah… Still, that is rather cool.
And I can brag about it now. Up in the forest it wasn’t too bad.

I fear you may have to be cross… I started Braille today and I’m not sure my brain (or fingers) can take in both! We’ll see 😉
Haha, I don’t think of you as a corpse, no. It was more the cool and dangerous part, due to your adventures with swords!

Braille! Wow. That’s cool. Must teach me the secret of it.

*sigh* I am literally the only person in the world who has never seen GoT. I like the cello version of the theme and isn’t Vince’s version on guitar awesome? He looks rather cold, though.

You NEED to see it, haha! I’m sure there are still quite a few who haven’t jumped into Westeros. 😉
If only I could be as good as those cellos! But shush, you’ll give him a big head if he reads this. 😉 (Agreed though, all his stuff is pretty awesome!)

I have been meaning to watch it since I found out Sean Bean was in it, then lost interest once I realised he had been killed (obviously. Sean Bean ALWAYS gets killed.)
His head couldn’t get any bigger! 😉

His spirit lives on! (He was so good in it too, testimony to his acting I guess that everyone still talks about Ned.)

I’ll watch the first series, then, just to witness the awesomeness of Sean. Hopefully I will be hooked and I will be able to see past his inevitable death 🙂 I have been seeing all this stuff about Jon Snow (yes, I thought it was the news reader at first) and it dawned on me that it seemed pretty good.

Super! A potential convert 😉 Having not read the books (at that point) I was hooked early on and the series do just get better and better (as money started to be thrown at them – bad wigs in S1!)
Can’t imagine what it will be like to watch when you know some of what’s coming though – it’s like knowing the plot twist in Sixth Sense! Hope you enjoy. 🙂

I only know that this Jon chap is now dead (or maybe he isn’t – apparently!) and that Sean Bean dies. That’s not too many spoilers! I am especially looking forward to the bad wigs 😉

Yours is obvs the best. Made Baz look up several times from his snooze, he was clearly erm intrigued. 😉
Well done for sticking at it for so long, I’m truly in awe of anyone who can coax a note out of an instrument. 👏🏻

Aww, thanks Clare! I knew someone would eventually recognise my ‘genius’! 😉
So glad it only raised an eyebrow though – you’d never forgive me if it had caused him to howl along!!

Watched it!! OMG! Zipping up to aovid spoilers 😀 And between I must say hats off you managed to pull off the theme music in your cello ❤ Its not pro-level I agree but hey there are people like me who cannot even whistle it properly and have to resort to tum tum ta da dum tum ta ri dum 😛 (sorry for that!) Loved the video and I am sure in a few days you will be there where you want to 🙂
And the compilations of the music!! OMG! Awesomeee! And your descriptions. So funny and perfect. That guy with the violin How does he do that ? LOVED this post ❤

Thanks for the non-spoilery comment! I still have to wait until this evening to watch it – so excited!!
And thanks for the kind words about my awful playing – It’s a good job there are so many talented individuals to drown me out!! I never fail to be amazed by the creativity of folks. 😊

Did you watch it yet? 😀
Hey no that was NOT awful at all! Like I said don compare to the pros, but for a learner you are doing really darn good 🙂

I did!! Very much enjoyed it – thought it was a good recap of where we’re at and liked some of the allegiances it hinted at. Did feel some of the character ‘check-ins’ were a little pointless but the last few scenes made up for it – did not expect THAT to happen (I’ve only read first three books so unsure whether this is something book readers would know about). In any case, it strangely endeared me instantly to that character, who previously I’d disliked.

I enjoyed your last post on happiness – unfortunately I never seem to be able to comment / like anything on your site. The comment box always tells me there’s an error 😦

That is no small undertaking, well done for learning it so fast! I have been watching Mozart in the Jungle and you do get the crazy idea of “Yes, I can totally learn to play the oboe/cello!” I laughed at the Cersei/Jaime mood music (shudders!). Fun post! 🙂

Thank you! I’m not sure I qualify as ‘learning it’ though 😉 I’ve heard good things about that show – would you recommend?
Glad you liked the post, thanks for reading!

It looks really difficult. I gave up trying to play any instruments years ago and resigned to the fact that I’ll always just be a listener. However, if you are doing request videos – maybe you could do the theme to Jaws 🙂
LikeLiked by 1 person
Oh it’s soooo difficult! That’s genius though, why didn’t I think of Jaws? I reckon I could manage that. And maybe the Imperial march from Star Wars!

I think, says someone who has never even touched a cello, that Jaws would be easy lol

Hey, learning to play an instrument is a commendable thing, and you’re on your way to being able to make even more music. You go! Well done, my honorary sister!

Aww, thanks for the kind words ‘big bro’! I’m glad you liked the (visual) composition. I think marginally recognisable is the best I can hope for at the moment – you had nothing to worry about in the embarrassing stakes with your concept art!!
I’d love to carry on with some instrument, just unsure whether this is the one for me. Maybe I should start smaller, with an elastic band on a shoebox 😉
