Being a lover of all things vintage, when I saw signs advertising a 1940s themed airshow at the local aeroclub (where I learned to fly a plane), I knew I had to check it out.
It was a rare occasion for them to be hosting an airshow, in fact I believe it’s the only one they’ve ever had, but it seems it was to mark their 25th anniversary.
The highlight for me was the Spitfire – rare in itself, with apparently less than 300 left in the world, this throwback to WW2 looped, twisted and dived to delight the crowds. The noise of the engines was fantastic!
It wasn’t only vintage aircraft on show: tractors, tanks, cars and motorbikes, some dating back to the 1920s, also put in an appearance. There was even a collection of beautifully crafted model planes.
One enthusiast, from a local village, had renovated a Ford Model T to replicate his grandfather’s delivery van, used for their family butcher business back in 1923.
Not only was it in immaculate condition but it had magic under the bonnet: an oven that would cook your food to perfection based on your mileage! Simply pop in your sausages before heading out on your day trip and have yourself a feast when you arrived. Genius!
The event appealed to all ages, from toddlers to old veterans proudly displaying their medals of honour. Isn’t it funny how children from every generation seem to love trucks, bikes and planes?
Although, I must admit I was a little disgruntled that they didn’t seem as interested in the Spitfire but when the Coastguard helicopter turned up on its break and performed a mock rescue, they all went charging across the airfield in hordes, waving and trying to get photos with it, like it was the greatest celebrity on the planet. Pfft, youth! 😉 (It was a pretty cool display though!)

Only as odd as me then! I’ve been watching them practice from afar (as in ‘just a speck in the sky’ far) but I could hear them loud and clear. Neighbours probably wondered why I was staring aimlessly at the clouds with a grin though!!

Thank you! The ‘meat’ was all fake… Which did make it seem a little freaky. Especially the partridges and pheasants hanging up with awful doll eyes!

My grandfather taught himself to fly in an open cockpit plane and then got his first pilots license to fly a Ford Tri Motor plane so I absolutely love your vintage aircraft photos, they bring back a lot of memories.

Awesome photos!! I absolutely love vintage planes and cars….especially from the 1930’s and 40’s. The cars remind me of the type you’d see in old black and white gangster movies. 🎬🎬🎥🎥

Some pretty stunning photos here m’dear, I must say! I LOVE air shows and living quite near to Duxford I quite often get a good view from from back garden 🙂 That Model T is incredible – imagine cooking a meal whilst driving along – brilliant!! Your post has brought the hugest smile to my face this morning, I thank you kindly 😀

Aww, I’m very pleased to have made you smile! Jealous of you living so close to Duxford though, it’s awesome – I visited with my class a few years back and adored it (probably more than them!) Got to ride in a DeHavilland bomber too whilst there – Having to load us on from the back first so it didn’t tip up was quite the experience! Airshows have always been a large part of my life as my grandfather was stationed at RAF Waddington during the war so he liked to take us to their annual display…until they cancelled it a couple of years ago. 😦

It is brilliant being near Duxford, I’ve seen the last operational Lancaster flying over my house and Spitfires are a fairly regular occurrence. Should be good this weekend – there’s always a good turn out for a Bank Holiday! 😀

I LOVE Lancasters. There used to be a large military museum, 2 mins walk from where I currently live, and the Lancaster took pride of place. Alas, the site is now a shopping centre…
