It seems ages since I’ve done one of these posts, so this edition of Web of Wonder spans notable content I’ve enjoyed over the last few months. I hope you like this little collection of internet gems and as always, if you’ve seen something remarkable on the web, I’d love for you to share!
I look forward to your thoughts – enjoy the week ahead everyone! ๐
THE FIRST CUT IS THE DEEPEST
Paper cuts are nasty little critters, aren’t they? Have you wincing in pain but leave little wounds, making you look like a cry-baby.
Well, this video may make you feel better if you’ve ever shed a tear over one. How much damage can a piece out your notepad actually do? This guy attempted to find out by replacing his metal circular saw blade with a thin sheet of copy paper. The results…terrifying!
ON YER BIKE
If you don’t know who Danny Macaskill is, you’re not alone – I didn’t either until I saw this. A professional stunt / trials cyclist from Scotland, he’s definitely got some skills when it comes to balancing on two wheels!
This little movie from Red Bull showcases some of these stunts and, well…it’s rather quaint at the same time. Made me smile anyway. ๐
LUNCHING ALONE
I’m sure everyone at some point in their life has ended up having to sit alone at break times, whether it was back in school or as an adult in a new job. For a child or teenager, this can be incredibly daunting and comes accompanied with being potentially ridiculed and bullied.
In an effort to combat this, teenager Natalie Hampton from California developed an app called ‘Sit with Us’. It allows kids to find groups of welcoming students in the canteen so that they hopefully never have to eat alone again.
Since she was a target for bullies in 7th grade, due to being alone at lunch, Natalie knew how distressing it could be and wanted to change that. She is also trying to encourage schools to have a ‘paper version’ advertised on notice boards in order to include those without smartphones.
Such a simple idea that could really make a difference to a child’s time at school. I think it struck a particular cord with me as even now, I still get anxious if I have to walk into a room already full of people, especially if I don’t know them well. Let’s hope it’s a huge success.

YOU NEVER SNOW WHAT YOU MIGHT FIND
It’s that time of year. Winter is coming / here and the white stuff is starting to fall. Not content with flapping around on his back in freshly fallen snow to make an angel, British artist Simon Beck goes a few steps further. Literally.
Taking a compass and donning some snow shoes, he sets out to create elaborate patterns that cover large areas. I cant even manage to write my name without messing it up!
This video shows some of his work from Banff National Park and is beautiful to watch.

As a side note, I mistakenly typed in ‘Danny Beck‘ when searching for images. Seems he’s an artist too and paints some pretty cool monsters. So, you really never ‘snow’ what you might discover by accident on the web! ๐

Come and say hi!
Great stuff. Looking back I’m sure I spent hours worrying about sitting alone at lunchtime. Now I think why – its bliss being by yourself sometimes but it’s a really good thing that girl has done because school kids are horrible

Yeah, I love shutting myself off now and having 5 minutes peace – still wouldn’t dare go into a pub or restaurant to eat alone though. I get paranoid and think everyone is wondering why I’m Billy no mates!

Haha really? I’ve got no issues going to a pub to drink on my own. Not as a regular thing just if I’m trying to kill time before meeting someone or whatever. Restaurants are ok to eat alone in when I’m away with work and there’s a restaurant there. Other wise I’d never go for a meal by myself unless it’s bk or mcd

Yep, even when I’ve been away with work, I’ve got room service! And if I have to meet people in a pub the have to stand RIGHT NEXT TO THE DOOR… I have person blinkers and don’t see anything!!

Oh dear. I do like a bit of room service but the way I see it, it’s a a hotel and a lot of people will be on their own and it’s great people watching! You have to challenge yourself to go into a pub by yourself ๐

Ha! I’d be disgruntled if I wasn’t allowed in – I’m just exercising the right not to go in!

Thanks! Those were great. I’m glad they included outtakes with Danny Macaskill’s ride. I wondered all the way through how many of the stunts he had to attempt more than once — or if he’s just some kind of superhero. lol

I think I enjoyed some of the outtakes more than the main film. I did enjoy him disappearing into the puddle! Glad you liked them Sue ๐
