Wednesday Lensday: Windmills of my Mind

‘Round like a circle in a spiral, like a wheel within a wheel,
Never ending or beginning on an ever spinning reel…’

These lyrics will be forever etched in my brain, thanks to PE lessons. As a child, we had to prance around the school hall, flapping ribbons in our wake, in a lame attempt to recreate some interpretive dance routine or with aspirations of being the next Olympic gymnast champion. But graceful we were not!

However, windmills are graceful and one of my favourite man-made structures. I don’t really mind what form they take, whether a good old-fashioned, quintessentially Dutch variety or a modern-day wind turbine. I could watch them for hours.

These images were taken on various visits to Skidby Mill, the last working mill in East Yorkshire. It still has its original outbuildings and now houses the East Riding Rural Museum, as it looks out across the Wolds. Silent in its majesty.

  4. I thought I was the only person with that memory haha. Must have been around the 88 Olympics in Seoul. I’ve always fancied living in a windmill or a lighthouse or something like that. Think it would be so cool. Great photos!

  5. I like windmills, though I don’t think I’ve ever seen one in action. We have a lot of wind turbines up on ‘thills. They wanted to put another 16 there which would have made it the biggest wind turbine farm (or whatever they’re called) in the country but certain locals moaned about them so the Government overuled the councils permission to build and made them open a full public inquiry. Tell you what, I’d much rather have a bunch of wind turbines on my doorstep than a nuclear powerstation. They’re on the moors anyway, what else can you do on the moors except graze sheep. Well I think wind turbines and wind mills are, like you say, very majestic looking.

    1. We have a lot off the coast in the North Sea and I think they look lovely too. I don’t know why people moan about them at all – like you say, far better than a nuclear power station!

  6. Your wind mills are lovely – the only one I ever met was in Water Mill, Long Island…built in 1800. Beautiful weathered grey…I loved it as a kid…I remember it always.

      1. Yep – a quality introduction to education! Never did us any harm, right?
        I wondered if that might cause a problem, sorry hun! I have been gradually sneaking in my proper name to all my online stuff. I should replace the picture with my ‘official’ author shot, but I thought if I did the name and pic at the same time, most people wouldn’t know who I was!
