Wednesday Lensday: Earth’s underdogs

Everyone loves a blossom tree: their puff-ball blooms are undeniably beautiful, they show off to the world, knowing they’re pretty, fresh and full of life. Even as they fall, they carpet the ground in ‘pink snow’, shedding their petals in a ‘Festival of Spring’ ticker-tape parade.

I was lucky enough to grow up in an area where the streets are lined with cherry blossoms – even the major roads are temporarily turned into a huge display of giant candy-floss every May and it’s an amazing sight.

However, with the warmer (and wetter) weather, there’s another growth spurt going on, one that is often overlooked and if noticed, probably considered a nuisance.

The humble dandelion is regarded by most as a weed, spreading itself indiscriminately whether it be in fields, flower beds or flagstones. But look closely at a dandelion ‘clock’ and you’ll discover a marvel of natural ‘engineering’, the seeds ready to disperse thanks to their own little transport system.

We might have spectacular mountain ranges and ancient woodlands, coral reefs and creatures great and small, but take time to remember Earth’s underdogs -they’re often just as stunning!

  2. Absolutely called Dandelion clocks when in their fluffy form. 😊
    I once fell over and managed to land, mouth open on top of a dandelion. I was spitting out seeds for hours.
    Gorgeous images but I’ll admit they are making my mouth feel a little fluffy. 😉

    1. Hahaha, oh no! I’m now envisioning a comedy-sketch worthy fall, with a slow motion ‘aaaaaaargh’ as you go down to explain the mouth open!! Glad you like the photos (kind of!)

  7. I like dandelions, they line the side of my drive at the moment but I think they look bright and cheery, wouldn’t dream of killing them off. They’re clever too. Start mowing the grass and they lie flat, popping up again when you put the lawnmower away. Magical 🙂

    1. Haha, they don’t really do that do they?! Incredibly clever if they do. They’re a great source of food for bees too apparently and we have to look after the bees!

      1. Yes they really do. Must be the vibration or something that alerts them but you can’t cut your dandelions with a lawnmower they just hide. I didn’t know Bees liked them.

      2. That’s amazing! No wonder they’re so blooming hard to get rid of!! Yes, apparently for early bees, they’re often the only source of pollen so it’s good to let them grow 🙂

    1. Thanks so much 🙂 I wish I’d had my ‘real’ camera with me to get better shots but we were just out for a walk and I thought I’d see if I could capture them blowing.
