No, not vendetta. Or Vienetta, but VENICE!
I told you I might start this as a series and I was inspired to share my Venetian adventures after reading Minaxi’s post about her time there!
It could have easily been ‘E is for Europe‘ as our trip to this timeless area, a couple of years ago, kicked off our whirlwind ‘city breaks’ journey, which also took in the sights of Rome and Paris.
Although it was Sam’s first time, I’d already visited Venice a few years previously, on a day excursion, sailing in from Rimini further along the coast. I was immediately smitten, as so many people are – what is it that captivates the hearts and imaginations of travellers?
For me, without sounding cliché (okay, a little cliché…) I just found the culture, canals and history magical – the architecture was beautiful, yet in that ancient, almost decaying way that it has. Venice is undeniably romantic and seductive but there is also something mysterious about it. Wandering around tiny alleyways and hidden corners, I could definitely picture myself back in time, channeling my inner Assassins’ Creed!
Although the touristy areas become swamped, the main sights such as St. Mark’s square, the Grand Canal and Rialto Bridge are still worth fighting the crowds for. However, staying in Venice allows you to experience the quieter side – we only found it busy between about 11am and 3pm, when most of the cruise ships bring in their hordes.
This is when we’d skip off (well, that was maybe just me!) to the back alleys, aimlessly strolling about, grabbing some strawberries to snack on by the canal, seeing what we could discover around the corner and perhaps picking up a few geocaches along the way! In general, we’d pass only a couple of people an hour.
Italy is the one country I’ve been (so far) that I would feel at ease moving to, with Venice remaining, hands down, my favourite city of all time. Perhaps it’s the allure of the water and its dark corners for doing…dark deeds! Or maybe it’s simply because I have a thing for masks…

I’m glad you enjoyed the images! Yes, we have one of the masks permanently attached to our bedroom wall – I’d have them all over if Sam liked them more!

Thank you! Maybe you could incorporate a sneaky visit – we did Venice, Rome and Paris in 9 days so you could perhaps hop on a flight for an overnight adventure!

You’re welcome! And I hope she has a wonderful time – I’ve never been to Switzerland but I liked Germany, from my brief stay there. 🙂

Wonderful photos! I’ve always wanted to go to Venice. My husband went a few months back on a business trip and I was green with envy! One day… Maybe one day! *deep sigh*

Hello stranger! I’ve not seen you about the blogosphere for a while, hope you’re well. And thank you – it’s hard to take a bad photo in Venice.
I would not have been happy about being left at home! I hope you get to go, it really is as lovely as it looks. 🙂

Hello! I know. I know! *hangs head in shame* I’ve been a right hermit recently. Winter has that effect on me. Fortunately, the sun has finally made an appearance, so I’ll be making my comeback really soon… Like…today!!!
I’m going to make sure he takes me next time… By hiding in his suitcase! 😜

Well, good to see you back. The weather is, admittedly, being very rude for Spring! The suitcase hiding sounds like a plan, although I think he should be whisking you off in style, not in the hand luggage!

I agree! I’ll butter him up and drop some hints around my birthday! I hope it works 🙂
Ps: it’s good to be back. I’ve really missed everyone here on WP!

I think lots of people have gone a bit awol over winter. I say just book it and present him with the bill! Hints never work for me!

Beautiful pics. What did it smell like?

Haha, you know, so many people warned me before going about the awful smell – especially as it was the middle of August – but I can honestly say there was nothing untoward. And I consider myself to be an expert sniffer!

Perfect! Take me with you next time, please. I’d like to riot about. Peacefully, tho.

Of course! Although, it lends itself more to stealthy manoeuvres than full on rioting. 😉

Oh okay. I need to practice my stealth moves anyway.

When I went to Venice, it rained the whole time. I loved it, but I think I would have loved and enjoyed it far more had there been a speck of sunshine! But I loved Florence… that was by far my favorite place in Italy. I wrote a post about it some time ago… I would love to go back there…

Oh no! That’s how I feel about Bruges – it was so cold but we’ve vowed to go back. Now Florence is somewhere I’ve not been yet but it’s on my list, along with Pisa – I’ve heard great things about it from friends who’ve been. I’ll have to read your post!

I can’t even pinpoint exactly what it was about Florence, but it is one of my favorite places on earth. 🙂

Amazing pics. I LOVE Venice (although find those masks really creepy) and would also move to Italy in a heartbeat.

Thank you! Sam’s not a huge fan of the masks either but I would have happily dressed up in them all day 😊 I don’t think I’ve met anyone who doesn’t like Venice – it must cast a spell!
