Happy Easter Monday Munchies everyone!
I realise I’ve not been doing much baking of late – in fact I’ve done very little since Christmas. We STILL have a small amount of Yuletide treats knocking about the place and what with my birthday last week and Easter dropping off an obligatory delivery of sweet things, I’ve not had a need to add to the stockpile!
So this week, I’d thought I’d do a mini-book review. Fear not, it is most definitely foodie related and caters to both my sweet tooth and my love of a certain TV / book series…
The lovely ladies I work(ed) with know my love of Westeros and along with a garden gnome (sat on the Iron Throne!) and a house sigil bookmark, another of my leaving / birthday gifts was the brilliantly titled Game of Scones: All Men Must Dine!
Packed full of treats and desserts, each recipe is a parody of Game of Thrones in some way: I was over the moon (and my stars…)!
The following are some examples of my favourites, but I’ve purposely not included the actual recipes, for copyright reasons. Also, be warned, there may be some spoilers if you’re not up to date as far as Season 4.
So without further ado, here are my thoughts on the book because Valar Baekaaris! (All Men Must BAKE!) 😉
Firstly, the quality of the book is good; clear photos for both the finished product and crucial points of the bake, plus it’s of a manageable size (approx A5).
The ingredients are given in metric (grams / ml etc) and each bake comes with a handy guide to the yield, helpfully displayed by the number of hungry Direwolves waiting to…erm… wolf it down!
Instructions are easy to follow (with funny quips and in-jokes that all fans will love) and none of the ingredients listed are out of the ordinary. In fact, all the bakes are relatively simple with the complexity coming from the assembly and decoration. With that said, there is a key to skill level, dependent on how much of the ‘cupcake seal’ is highlighted.
And then we come to the play on words. Arya hungry? You should be! I love a good, cheesy play on words (have you read my blog titles?) and this book doesn’t disappoint. From the ‘author’, Jammy Lannister, to the Castle Black Forest Gateau there are some gems in there. Even the allergy advice is amusing…
By far, my favourite recipe is Oberon’s Smashing Surprise – Do you want to feel the power of The Mountain?!
However, I was also amused by Bran Muffins – it works on many levels for me, bran as a food being a bit boring for example… And if you know of an uber-fan who wants a wedding cake making, this one might fit the bill. Although, I’d be a little aFREY’d it would bring bad luck!
Oh, and the Tyrion SHORTbread is just genius – who thought a bit of icing could bring a character to life SO well?!
There are many more recipes to try out and although none of the bakes are going to wow any Michelin starred chefs, for a superfan, whether you’re an avid baker or just like to collect all things Thrones, then it’s a must-have!
I can’t wait to bake some of the treats and although I’ve not seen the series (I know, I know…), I’m also tempted to purchase the sister book, Baking Bad!
What do you think? Do you own it, want it, have you tried it? Let me know in the comments and as always, thanks for reading!
Game of Scones is available from Amazon for between £5 – £9.99, dependent on offers. (See link above)

Ah yes, I like doing the ‘Web of Wonder’ – it’s quite new but there are so many great things on the internet I’m sure it will be a long running series!

Haha, you should be out catching that shark! I bet mine don’t turn out nearly as well but as you know, nothing that a bit of buttercream won’t cover up!
