Cake. In a glass.

Cake. In a glass.

I don’t like alcohol.

There, I said it. It’s alright, I can tolerate it, but if it suddenly disappeared off the planet I’d not miss it. A little like chocolate. And coffee. Ooh, who said you need politics and religion to be controversial?! 😉

However, sometimes I need to leave the house and be sociable and indulge in a glass or two – there are only certain times and places that it’s acceptable to drink tea and nobody wants to sit with their pint whilst I sip on a glass of milk! Designated driver duties work wonders but still, I can’t always use that excuse.

So when it comes to ‘preferred’ beverages over 0% ABV, I skip straight to the harder stuff – I’ve developed a liking for vodka, probably because I don’t think it has that much of a taste (and I can pretend I’m an international spy…), although I’d like to think I’m a little more discerning these days than liking bog-standard Smirnoff.

However, anyone who knows me realises that I do love cake – so joy of joys, when a drink tastes like a cake, I’m a happy bunny! Perhaps this is another reason why I opt for vodka: the beauty of the spirit being that you can infuse it with anything and it will pick up the flavours. Strawberries, Skittles, even bacon or pickles (?) can be used to create a distinct base for a cocktail.

Therefore, as tomorrow marks my… *cough* birthday, I thought I’d share some delicious cocktails, that imitate classic cakes and treats for this week’s Monday Munchies. Because, what says celebration more than cakes and cocktails? (Okay, okay, presents, balloons, flowers, fireworks, champagne, parties all work too!)

Shakers at the ready for CAKE. IN A GLASS!

The White Chocolate Martini

WhiteChocolatini-123548644

Yes, I know I said I’m not the biggest fan of chocolate (and I’m aware this isn’t a cake!) but I do quite like white chocolate. A classic drink is given a sweet, creamy twist with the inclusion of white chocolate liqueur. Yum!

  • 1 1/2 ounces vanilla vodka
  • 1 ounce Godiva White Chocolate Liqueur
  • 2 ounces cream
  • White chocolate shavings for garnish.

The Key Lime Pi-tini

KeyLimePieMartini-123548683

Vanilla vodka forms the base that combines with fruits and triple sec to make this vibrant martini imitating a well-loved dessert.

  • 1 1/2 ounces vanilla vodka
  • 1/2 ounce triple sec orange liqueur
  • 1 ounce pineapple juice
  • 1/2 ounce lime cordial
  • Crushed graham crackers (for the rim of glass).

A Cracking Creme Brulee

cremebrule_martini

I love creme brulee – smashing through the surface (the more burned the better) to the vanilla-y, custardy gloop beneath! And now you can have the same experience in a glass, complete with a cracking caramel top!

  • 2 parts Stoli Vanil Vodka
  • 3/4 parts Port of Crème Anglaise
  • 1 dash of Simple Syrup
  • Hard caramel for garnish (see photo).

The Screaming… Banshee

banshee-cocktail

I love the name. I love bananas (and a chocolate covered one makes it sound like a cake) and I could drink cream out the tub (shush). Combination win!

  • 1 ounce banana liqueur
  • 1/2 ounce white crème de cacao liqueur
  • Milk or cream

The Black Forest Glass-eux

black forest

It’s so Eighties – eating a steak and having a BFG (no, not the Roald Dahl character) for dessert. But although I don’t like the darkest of chocolates, I can’t deny that it goes amazingly well with cherries and cream. So instead of a prawn cocktail, try this one instead!

  • 30 ml creme de cacao
  • 30 ml cherry liqueur
  • 30 ml Kirschwasser® cherry brandy
  • 30 ml cream

Not Old Fashioned, an Old Favourite

Apple pie is the perfect, home cooked comfort food. So being able to have that flavour in a grown-up drink is fantastic. There are many recipes around, some you can even drink warm, but I liked the look of this one from A House in the Hills…that doesn’t use apples! Find the recipe here.

My Favourite Cake

aIMG_5012fc

Carrot cake is all kinds of delicious, plus I can kid myself that it’s healthy because it includes veg! This recipe recreates the distinctive taste, complete with a cream cheese frosting garnish. It makes a butterscotch sauce from scratch but you can also use butterscotch liqueur. Recipe here.

Salted Caramel Scrumptiousness
martini
It was THE flavour of recent years, with anything and everything having a salty twist. I’m a huge fan of millionaire shortbread made with it so wanted the same flavour in a drink. People may have replaced their foodie converastions with another S these days (sriracha) but this is the taste I prefer! Click here to get the ingredients.

Catch the Gingerbread Cocktail!

Betty Crocker does cakes. And apparently cocktails. How creamy and gorgeous does this look? It’s like all the escapee cookie men have been rounded up and put in a blender…hmmm, maybe not the best visual to end on! Find out more here.

  1. Happy birthday🎩 I hope that you have a vodka martini with lemon shaken not stirred. Your drinks and your post looks excellent and I hope that you celebrate your day with lots of messages from your friends and family.

  2. The white chocolate and the creme Brule martinis have my mouth a watering!!! They look sooo good!

While I post about wine a lot…I’m really NOT a big drinker. I usually have A drink once or twice a month. More only if there is a special occasion! So….I get it! I usually pull the DD card too because if I going to drink is rather do it at home because I’ve had people say they will be DD and end up tanked.

The count down to your birthday begins!!!!!!

    1. They’re definitely the ones I’d choose first! Countdown has begun and been. Actually said good night to my thirties before getting into bed!! But I wasn’t born until 9am UK time, so I’m officially still in the last decade for another hour! 🙂

  3. Those are some very tempting concoctions.

Vodka was always my spirit of choice, once drunk in shots – ice cold (from a bottle kept in the freezer) Had to be good stuff – Absolut or Stolichnaya. These days I try not to be quite so indulgent…

Have a fabulous cakey / boozy birthday!

    1. Thanks Michelle! I’m sure there’ll be some version of cake during the day. As for trying each one, sounds like a good idea but I’m such a lightweight I’d have to space them out to one a week 😉

  4. I don’t have much use for alcohol either. Although my mom makes this amazing red wine-champagne-strawberry punch every Christmas Eve. That is delicious.

Coffee, on the other hand… I would probably die without it. 🙂

  5. I confess I am the same about alcohol, I’m feeling a bit guilty because everyone is congratulating on having a dry 2016 so far, but I’m not bothered really. Have a lovely day tomorrow xx

  6. What a great post! I’m not big on alcohol either. If I lived alone, I wouldn’t even have wine in the house. But I do enjoy the aperitifs that Bonaparte and I enjoy on the weekends. I would rather drink milk or water!

    1. Yay for not being alone in the dislike of it! I have to force myself to drink wine – it has to be sweet. Glad you enjoyed the read Catherine! 🙂
