I need a hole in my bucket, dear Liza!

I need a hole in my bucket, dear Liza!

Well, it’s finally here. The year I should probably stop wearing my hair in pigtails and think about growing up.

IMG_0256

Pfft! Like that’s going to happen!

However, I do have a significant birthday coming up in a few months, the sort that makes you want to reflect on your life and achievements so far. Let’s just say, it’s not my 21st. Or sadly even my 21 + 9th…

How it happened is beyond me. I mean, I’m fully versed in the planetary movements that cause the sun to rise and set each day, marking the passage of time but there’s still a large part of my brain that doesn’t really believe we’ve moved past about 1998!

Anywho, what have I done with my time on Earth so far? Well, quite a lot and not enough would be my honest answer. I’ve been lucky to have some fantastic experiences over the years, yet still have many things I’d like to attempt or achieve.

Around 15 years ago (in another ‘it’s a milestone, let’s make some plans‘ kind of moment), I created a bucket list. Jack and Morgan totally stole my idea…

Bucket_list_poster

Since then, ideas have changed, ‘been there, done that’s‘ have happily occurred, so I thought it was time to revise the original to edit and improve it. Okay, completely rewrite it – it’s not like I have the back of an envelope it was scribbled on anymore!

I’d like to be clear they are not resolutions (I’ve seen a few great posts using bucket lists in this way), nor are they things I believe I’ll (necessarily) achieve before the end of the year, let alone my birthday.

Think more of it as an internal wishlist of being me. Read at your leisure or peril, then please tell me which ones you’d like on yours – you know I love your comments! 🙂

I present to you HAYLEE’S BUCKET LIST: version 20.16

Visit ICELAND, NEW ZEALAND and CANADA.
I love wilderness, I love nature. Oh, and I love hobbits!

See the GRAND CANYON and a RAINFOREST.
Before they disappear. Obviously I don’t mean the Grand Canyon..

Learn a MARTIAL ART.
I want to wax on, wax off and look like I can kick-butt. Although, I quite fancy capoeira.

Go STORM CHASING.
I’ve always been fascinated by tornadoes and would like to witness one, despite the danger.

Safely experience a VOLCANIC eruption and an EARTHQUAKE.
I grew up wanting to be a seismologist. Or a volcanologist. We had a mini, ‘2. nothing major’ quake a few years back in the UK. Such a bizarre sensation that renewed my interest.

Take a trip in a GLIDER.
I’ve flown a plane, which was incredible, but I think the tranquility of being in a glider must be the closest you can get to actually having wings.

WING WALK.
Bungee jumping? No, I’ll leave it thanks. Stand on the outside of a plane (dressed as some 1940’s pin-up of course!) – absolutely!

Care for / study ORANGUTANS in their natural environment.
A college friend of mine went to Borneo, helped build a school and nursed orphaned Orangutans. Her experience has always stuck with me.

Take a picnic in YOSEMITE National Park.
Yes, I want to be Yogi Bear…

Retire to a LOG CABIN by a lake.
With some beehives. And lots of wellies.

Cabin11_EL_7dec12_alamy_b_639x426

Take part in an ARCHAEOLOGICAL DIG.
Preferably dinosaurs, but I’ll brush the dust off anything!

Have my photography displayed in a GALLERY.
I’ll brush up my skills and learn how to make canapes…

Meet BARACK OBAMA.
I don’t do politics. That’s not the reason he’s on my list. Current Mr. President does come off as one incredibly cool dude though and I’d like to see what he’s like in real life. Plus I’m fascinated by how normal he seems to want to be, yet lives his life in a high-security fish bowl. Think he’d be interesting to have a coffee with.

Have a book PUBLISHED.
I have two finished and am in the final processes of preparing the manuscripts to send out. Step one is far from the end point though!

Leave a LEGACY.
How, I don’t know.

I’d like to think I can leave a mark of my existence and have a positive effect on people. Isn’t that what everyone wants?

I know, as a teacher, I’ve already had an impact on many lives (hopefully a good one) but as we’ve made the decision not to have children, the line stops here.

So perhaps getting a book published or at least this little blog will be my flag on top of the mountain, telling everyone I was here. 🙂

Let’s start making some holes in that list!

(Incidentally, I’ve just realised that after taking out reblogs etc, this is my 100th post. Go me!)

  1. Most of your list would scare me! I am seriously afraid of heights. I’ve never made a bucket list for the same reason I never make resolutions — to avoid feeling that I’ve failed!

But I’d love to be published, too, and I would mind learning to be a Ninja Turtle. But I’d like to retire to a beach… 🙂

    1. I like beaches too – well I like the sea. I used to want a 3 storey house on a cliff, with the top floor being entirely glass to act as my art studio! I still wanted it to be somewhere wild though – much more interesting to me than staring at calm, flat water!
Hopefully, it won’t be a complete fail on everything – I should really book some karate lessons or something!

    1. Thanks so much for commenting! When I finally manage to get to any of these places, I’ll just have to remember to experience the moment and not be too eager to see it all from behind a camera!

  2. I never thought about making a bucket list until now. So many interesting yet random stuff on your list. Storm chasing really grabbed my attention. Dangerous yet thrilling 😀
Hope that you achieve everything on your list.

    1. Thank you – I hope so too! That’s the beauty of bucket lists, they can be random and out the ordinary but still (fairly!) plausible. You should definitely make one! Thanks for stopping by 🙂

  3. Whoah girlie! (Or should I say “old lady” even though I refuse to believe you are older than I) That is quite the bucket list! So random and awesome!!! It’s funny because my new page has a bucket list page! He he! You have some great adventures ahead of you!!! I have another blog i follow that just posted about Iceland…. I should send you her way. Some breathtaking posts and I believe some pricing too. I object to no pigtails! I still wear them frequently and I am noooo spring chicken. (See old fashioned phrase for proof) I’m not a huge Obama fan, but it would be interesting. I’d go Jim Carey personally, but I hear he’s quite the wild and erratic bipolar so… It would be crazy entertaining! Lastly…. As someone who IS adopted…. Adoption is awesome!!! 😀 great post….as usual!

    1. Haha, yes this ‘old lady’ likes to be random! The pigtails won’t go, I enjoy them too much and I need some way to keep my masses of hair out of the hands of kids!
Oooh, yes please send me the other blog link – I follow one: Travelling the world solo. She’s just posted about Iceland – I wonder if it’s the same one!
That’s great to hear a positive opinion on adoption too – I’m amazed how many people I know that were adopted or fostered. Maybe that’s why it’s subconsciously always seemed like a good idea to me!
Look forward to reading what’s on your bucket list!! 😊

  4. Start with a trip to NZ! Then you’ll have that ticked off, plus you can experience an earthquake (they still have them all the time in Christchurch) and go fly a glider around the hills of Queenstown (I couldn’t imagine a better place to do it). Also, I may be a little biased towards NZ.

Great list though, hope you get through a few in 2016

  5. an exquisite bucket list, don’t know about maybe Iceland for me lol too cold for a boy from the tropics , but I do have to say I enjoy how diverse and different this bucket list is #epic is the word to describe it

    1. Thank you 😊 I’m sure you’d be find with a few extra layers on! To be fair, it’ll be a bit too cold for me and I’m from northern England – we were brought up freezing!

  6. This is a great list, although some of them I can’t imagine doing myself– like storm chasing! I have similar travel goals. I’ve been to Canada, but New Zealand and Iceland would be awesome. The latter is becoming so trendy that I need to get there before it’s impossibly expensive. I’m working through a bucket list of sorts on my blog too, if you care to check it out.

    1. I hear you on the Iceland prices grumble – it’s already very steep. Hoping I’ll get there this year, but agreed it’s becoming the ‘in-place’ to visit.
Pleased you stopped by… I’ll be sure to check out your post! 🙂

      1. If you’re either of the two ages I guessed (and the second one is really pushing it, even if it’s +5 years), you look fantastic and I better look that good when I get there.

      2. Aww thank you! ☺️ I’m lucky that the females in my family always look younger than their years. Shame I just need more nana naps now – so go with your top end guess!

    1. If only, Professor, if only! Actually, I don’t think I’d like to be 10 again, I had a very unfortunate haircut…
I knew someone would be disgruntled with my presidential love! It would be a very random meeting wouldn’t it?! Here, have a coffee whilst I get my tweezers out…

    1. Thanks Carol! Hopefully get a couple ticked off this year at least. You’ve got a massive ‘geek list tick off’ coming up – saw you were going to Spacefest. Sounds incredible. I should look into going, sure I could tick off my archaeological dig in Arizona too!

  7. Awesome! As you can well imagine we have a lot of shared dreams, should you ever fancy a Thelma and Louise style crisis – I’m your woman! 😉
I’m a bit of a ninja and have to admit that I can never shake off the feeling of looking a bit of a plonker when I’m busting out the capoeira. I’m all about the kick kata personally – Kia!
Good luck with the book project – that’s amazing!

    1. Is there no end to your talents woman?! I fully expect that I’d fall flat on my face if I ever took up capoeira, but the dance aspect appeals to me.
As for the road trip, you’re on. As long as you supply the route via epic geocaches!

      1. I get my Ninja fix through just a regular body combat class, trouble is a couple of my instructors are TKD champs and MMA fighters so they make us do it all properly. no bad form allowed, tbh I mostly go so that I can eat more. 😀
I hadn’t considered the road trip from an epic caching point of view. I need to up my game!

    1. Thank you! My birthday isn’t until March, so I might even get some of these in before then. If I end up reposting it same time next year, please tell me off for slacking though!

      1. I think I would opt for soft arts like Wing Chun or Aikido that use internal energy more than muscular energy. Learning how to work with my internal power will help me grow spiritually. In that case, I’ll be able to write even more essays! Yay!

    1. Thank You! And no, not too hard. My problem is, I have so many things I want to do, narrowing it down is an issue! Such as travel – so many places I want to go but if I were to win the lottery the places mentioned would be straight away, top of the list 🙂

  8. I love the breadth of your list and look forward to the photos. I’ve only achieved one of these – gliding. How about leaving your body for research as a legacy? I’m considering it, but don’t tell anyone as I haven’t yet discussed it with my wife and daughter!!!!!!!!

    1. Haha, I wont say a word! I’m not sure I fancy the idea myself though – I’m an organ donor but I wont give up my corneas. Have a weird notion that my soul would still see through my eyes in someone else’s body!
      Are you a regular glider?

      1. Oh no! There is part of me that is very worried about being at the mercy of the thermals but I guess you can’t go through life thinking that way 🙂
